Calls to ban international students from owning pets

Animal lovers are calling for bans to prevent international students from owning dogs after a dog was dumped on a Sydney street.

After graduating from university a student returned home to China and discarded the four-year-old Labrador on the side of the road in Killara in Sydney’s upper north shore.

The Lab was taken in and treated for ticks by local vet Dr Sam Kovac.

Dr Kovac shared the story online in a video that was viewed over 10,000 times. The pooch quickly found a new home, but not all discarded dogs are so lucky.

Dr Kovac has joined the voices of animal lovers calling to restrict animal ownership to permanent residents to stop things like this happening.

International students are advised to take on pets through foster programs.
