Welcome to the next instalment of Dog Tails. When clients visit us for studio pet portraits, they often recount the stories of their dogs lives. With each dog being different, so is each story. Some are happy tales, some inspiring, some sad, but each one ends with love as their dog subjects find a place and person to call their own.

Last week we had a visit from Tracey and her 10 year old German Shepherd, Cruizer.   Tracey says “Cruizer is our special boy. He came to us as an 8 week old German shepherd puppy. He had a full black long coat but he was more like a bear cub than a dog at that time.

When we collected him at the airport he was very ill, and was covered in faeces and urine and whining uncontrollably (never talk to me about breeders as I have nothing good to say about them). It took months to work out what was wrong with him.   Lucky one vet suggested Sharyn Bryden at Murdoch Dermatology and she was able to diagnose his severe allergies after a life threatening allergy screening. We were told he’d be lucky to reach the age of 6 but this year in April he will turn 10.

With all his struggles and illness he has never growled or raised a shackle. He is a big wolf of a dog with a temperament so sweet & good natured. He has been the most wonderful gift we could ever have asked for and it has been the hardest battle to keep him well. He is one lucky dog to have us as his humans but we are far more lucky to have had him.

Last year was a really tough year with him but we take it day by day and have the best specialist and vet caring for him & helping us in his journey – we are very blessed.

Cruizer may be the sweetest boy ever but we all have our hang ups. His unfortunately is cats. He hates them with a passion. So when I decided a year or so ago to rescue a feral kitten, I thought he would be fine as it’s a baby (about 6 weeks old when we found him) and Cruizer is so gentle with little dogs that they’d end up being one of those cute dog/ cat pics you see on Facebook showing love to each other – that so didn’t happen.

When our kitten finally grew big enough to be allowed near Cruizer he fluffed up and freaked out then took off under our couch. Cruizer, shocked by this tiny being freaking out, took chase. It has been like a Tom and Jerry show in our house ever since.

Logically we named our kitten, Khaos as it has been chaos in the house ever since. They have a love/hate relationship now with both annoying the other when they choose to, but every so often we walk in on them laying close together on my bed or near the stairs and we wonder if they secretly love each other but put on a show just for us.”
