Dogs just want to have fun

It’s one of the warmest months in Australia and many dogs are looking a bit ragged.

My dog spends a lot of the summer inside with the air-conditioner on when it gets really hot. This is also after his mandatory morning walk! Most dogs evolved in the colder climates of Europe so they don’t tolerate our heat.  Dogs cant sweat all over their body (like humans) and many of them have thick coats. Lots of water and somewhere cool is definitely on the priority list for our dogs in summer.

I could bang on about keeping your car windows down but I want to make a pitch for it being the perfect time for you to get some early morning off-lead dog walks happening.

Your dog craves dog company. That is why they have adapted to human life so much (they love being in a pack). But nothing beats them mingling with their own kind in large open spaces.  It’s a primal thing and it’s a necessity. They even crave having leaving their poop outside of their yard.

I’ll give you a couple of human reasons why you might want to start dog walking more regularly (particularly while we have longer daylight hours and warmer morning temperatures). Walking is a great way to ease an owner who has never visited an off-lead dog park to consider starting the ritual that should and could last all year long. Most people have a burst of occasional dog walking during the summer months, and mothball their dog during the long hard winters. Exactly the time when most dogs flourish!

I walk my dog twice a day, feed him a mostly raw meat diet, feed him meat-based treats, groom him every few months, wash him weekly, give him medicated shampoo and conditioner, give him monthly anti parasite and worm capsules, have dog insurance and have public liability insurance. I still know that this only goes a little way towards his true full satisfaction.

It’s true that I walk dogs professionally for a living, but what got me into it in the first place was seeing the health and happiness of my dog go through the roof. Seeing him as the best dog he could be, for himself and me.  A dog compromises so much in our world, that just one or two hours a day of letting it have a little freedom in a dog park is the least I can do.

Happy summer dog walks Australia!
