Why Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is important to dog lovers everywhere

If you live in Australia you might have not heard a lot about Fort Lauderdale. I have to tell you that until last week I hadn’t given the place a second thought. Then as part of my due diligence to understanding and selling healthy dog treats, I thought I would see if America had any examples for us about who and why people over there buy them.

There is this thing called Google Trends where you can actually track the metro location of people who search most about a particular trend over the last seven years.  When I decided to check on where the most active people searching for ‘healthy dog treats’ lived in America over the last year (up until now in 2017), it turns out that its Fort Lauderdale, on the southern tip of Florida.

When you begin to crystallise a theory before the data it can often prejudice what the data is really saying, but in the case of healthy dog treats, the results became clear for themselves. Of the seven main metro regions that searched for healthy dog treats, FIVE of them were in strongly Democratic Party (presidential elections Nov 2016) metro counties, and the other two were slightly Republican counties, but even these counties were inside of strong Democrat controlled states.

For a common search term like ‘dog treats’  hundreds of counties will register on Google Trends, and many of them will be small unheard of places because its a very generic term. However only SEVEN metro regions were deemed to have enough search data for Google to report them for healthy dog treats. And for them to be such a high rate of Democratic voters suggests a couple of things to me.  It is likely that with strong Democratic voting, that the people searching for healthy dog treats had democratic leanings, which in theory is being progressive, open to change, and have the ability to change minds based on the latest scientific findings (global warming anyone?).

Ironically, if Republicans are true traditionalist and believing in old established ways you might think that they too would understand that dogs evolved from carnivores who mostly ate meat, and meat might be in healthy dog treats. But it seems like perhaps ‘healthy’ might just be a little too ‘new age’ for them?  I strongly believe with the financial and political power of the big grain based dog food companies most Americans (and Australians) would not understand how much grain is in their dog’s diet and that a remedy is ‘healthy dog treats’ (when it includes meat).

The problem of course is that just because you search for ‘best dog treats’ or ‘healthy dog treats’ it doesn’t mean that the search results will have any treats that have meat in them. They will be just the results that Google mysteriously decides should be at  the top of the rankings. So many results are artificially coloured and flavoured wheat biscuits, that there is no correlation between what Google considers healthy, and the meat based treats I know to be healthy.

By the way, Fort Lauderdale citizens are relatively wealthy and 65% voted for Clinton (Democrats) but this leading metro search region was in a State where Republicans lead overall for primary vote by 1%. Clearly healthy dog treats was not a major issue on any politicians agenda, however just understanding the positive thinking that can be attributed to a person who is smart enough to at least look for healthy dog treats online, if not find them, is a great step in the right direction for dog health !

No matter which party you vote for in Australia – I am hoping you can come to some good science based decisions on your dog treats based on evolution science (their digestive system) and dog nutrition understanding, not just buy from the company with the most money or best ads.
