Why most people don’t know about meat dog treats

If you think dog food companies use meat in their product because there’s a big chunk of meat on the front cover then you will be sorely disappointed. Unfortunately most dog food has 30 per cent mid to low quality meat in the products to enhance their profits.

These same companies are also the same multinationals that supply dog treats to supermarkets. Because they sell a lot of other human food and get a lot of shelf space and bargaining power, they also get a chance to put their grain-based treats on the super market shelves. Most people shop at supermarkets for dog food and dog treats so they don’t even know what their dogs are missing out on. Meat nutrition includes meat based essential amino acids and enzymes that carnivores need for a proper functioning gut and brain.

Have you noticed meat prize rises?

If you have seen the price of beef steak and lamb skyrocket at your local supermarket or butcher you might also understand that is going to trickle on down into the meat-based dog treat market. Much of Australia’s prime livestock, stations and abattoirs are falling into foreign hands, the public of Australia has little input into how much meat we export. If a lot of Australian meat is now exported (with the big jump starting in 2013) then the price of what is left over in Australia rises dramatically.

We have noticed a stiff increase in meat treat supply prices over the last few years and have tried to keep the prices down, but there is a limit to what authentic treat supplier businesses can do and still remain in business. Compared to some dog food bags, you are still getting a great bargain through the smaller dog treat stores.

If you want to venture into the world of meat based dog treats to make up for what dogs are missing out on in their main food diet, consider 100% meat dog treat products and buying from the little guy.  If you don’t, you may just find that you end up with two main suppliers fighting it out in the online world.

Remember to always speak to your vet before changing your dog’s diet.
